K64 Light Industries – a great location for businesses

Íslandshús designs and manufactures precast concrete elements and related components. The company began operations in 2012, following three years of design and development work by its founder, Óskar Húnfjörð, together with a team of engineers. This development work resulted in a fully designed and integrated building system based on precast concrete elements manufactured in predetermined sizes, which can then be combined in different configurations to create a variety of building types.

Ideal location for Íslandshús

According to Óskar Húnfjörð, founder of Íslandshús, having access to a factory building at Light Industries area in Iceland's Airport Region through Kadeco was crucial when the company was first established.

“Without this, along with the support of Reykjanesbær Town through business opportunities and the confidence shown in us by our bank, Íslandsbanki, it would not have been possible to get the company up and running,” says Óskar.

“This is a very good location for our business. Access to suitable sites has been straightforward, and we have had a good working relationship with both Kadeco and Reykjanesbær. Our main raw materials are close at hand, including aggregates and sand from the Stapafell and Lambafell quarries, as well as Aalborg cement, which is landed at Helguvík Harbour only 10 minutes away.

“We have also been successful in recruiting people who live in the area to work at the factory. Transport links from the Light Industries Area are efficient, and other services are easily accessible, both locally and in the Greater Reykjavík area.”

K64 plays an important role in the region’s development

According to Óskar, the K64 development plan is important for realising the opportunities created by the region’s proximity to Iceland’s international airport and for supporting the strategic development of a diverse range of airport-related activities. Although Íslandshús is not heavily dependent on the airport itself, the company has benefited from supplying precast concrete elements for development projects undertaken by Isavia.

“Our vision for the future of Íslandshús is clear. The company will continue to grow in line with the needs and expectations of our customers. Continued product development and innovation will help us maintain our position as a manufacturer of high-quality products, backed by good service and positive customer relationships,” Óskar concludes.
