A Wellness Centre Growing with the Community

When Sporthúsið opened at Ásbrú in the autumn of 2012, it was far from certain that a large fitness centre on a former military base would become one of Reykjanesbær’s established service hubs. Today, more than a decade later, Sporthúsið has firmly established itself as a comprehensive health and fitness centre for residents, businesses and visitors in the area.

All Health-Related Services Under One Roof

At its core, Sporthúsið’s operation is centred on health, movement and service for people of all ages. The facility includes a large gym floor, group classes, spinning, yoga, a heated studio, childcare, personal training, CrossFit, boxing and a range of support services related to health and rehabilitation. The building is also home to therapists offering services such as musculoskeletal therapy, chiropractic care and other health-related treatments. “Our goal is to provide a wide range of services under one roof for everyone—from those starting out on their wellness journey to those maintaining their fitness or seeking specialised support,” says Ari Elíasson, owner and managing director of Sporthúsið.

A Building with History

The Sporthúsið premises have a long history. In earlier years, the building housed sports and training facilities for the United States military, along with a swimming pool and changing rooms, and it once hosted major basketball games in the area. When Sporthúsið began operations, there was a clear opportunity to give this historic property an important role in a rapidly growing community. Ari explains that the idea emerged when the founders spotted a gap in the market for a fitness centre. Ásbrú was developing as a neighbourhood and Reykjanesbær was expanding, yet many doubted that people would seek out this kind of service at Ásbrú. “Experience has shown otherwise. With diverse services and a clear focus, Sporthúsið has demonstrated that Ásbrú is not a remote location, but part of one connected community,” says Ari.

Serving a Diverse Group of People

Today, Sporthúsið serves not only local residents but also numerous companies and institutions. These include response teams from the Icelandic Coast Guard, organisations based in the airport area and foreign units staying temporarily in Iceland. Its location, close to Keflavík International Airport and centrally positioned within Ásbrú, has proven to be a major strength.

Golf simulators will be the lates addition to Sporthúsið services in September

Services Continue to Expand

According to Ari, new steps in the development of Sporthúsið are ahead. “We will be adding padel courts, which are expected to be ready by mid-August, and golf simulators, which are scheduled for completion by mid-September.” With these additions, the range of services will broaden even further, strengthening Sporthúsið’s position as a versatile destination for exercise, health and recreation.

When looking ahead to the next 10 years, the company’s mission is to be at the forefront the fitness and health-related services in the Suðurnes region. “Our goal is clear; to be the first choice of the pople in the area when it comes to exercise, health and general well-being” Ari concludes.
