A new nursing home on Keilisbraut in Ásbrú will strengthen services for older people in the Suðurnes region and become an important part of the neighbourhood’s continued development. Representatives from Kadeco attended an information meeting on 2 September, where Glóra ehf. presented the home’s design and planned construction work. Preparations are well advanced, and according to the presentation, handover is scheduled for 9 June 2028.
The home will accommodate 90 residents, with an existing building on Keilisbraut undergoing extensive alterations and refurbishment to serve its new purpose. The design emphasises bright, welcoming spaces, accessibility, and an environment that supports residents’ independence, safety and quality of life. Private accommodation and communal areas will offer opportunities for both privacy and companionship, while also creating a positive working environment for staff.
The project is a welcome addition to the ongoing development of Ásbrú. A diverse community has grown here in recent years, and upcoming projects will add more homes and strengthen the neighbourhood’s infrastructure. A development agreement between Kadeco, the Icelandic Government and the Municipality of Reykjanesbær provides for up to 1,000 new homes, along with supporting infrastructure. One of these projects is the planned development of Spítalareitur, where an agreement has been reached for at least 200 homes of various sizes and types.
As housing development progresses, services and community life must grow alongside it. The successful Hjarta Ásbrúar (Heart of Ásbrú) summer project at Andrews Theatre demonstrated the value of gathering places and varied recreational activities for local children and families. Based on ideas developed by children at Háaleitisskóli, the project ran until mid-August. This experience provides valuable insights for the continued development of community activities in Ásbrú. The new nursing home will add services for older generations, enabling more people to make their home in the neighbourhood in accommodation suited to their needs.
This development aligns closely with the K64 vision for Ásbrú, which emphasises a diverse neighbourhood, improved local services and good connections. The nursing home supports that vision by bringing an essential care service into the neighbourhood and repurposing an existing building to serve a new community role. In this way, Ásbrú’s transformation continues, bringing together the area’s history and the community’s evolving needs.
