A wide range of companies operate within the K64 core development areas, each contributing to the region’s evolving landscape. Our aim is to highlight some of these organizations to showcase the diverse activity taking place in Suðurnes and the broader K64 impact zone.
Verne Global is a sustainable data center solutions provider that began its operation in Ásbrú in 2008. The company operates sustainable data centers, with a strong emphasis on high-performance computing and the use of renewable energy.
Today, Verne Global operates a portfolio of approximately 60,000 square meters of data center facilities across Iceland, the United Kingdom, and Finland. These include data halls, support infrastructure, and spaces for daily data center operations. Verne Global’s core service is providing international companies with secure hosting for their IT equipment in Iceland.

In addition, the company ensures high standards of physical security, reliable energy supply, and efficient cooling, enabling customers’ systems to operate safely and dependably. Verne Global employs around fifty people in Iceland. The vast majority of its Iceland-based employees live in nearby communities in the Suðurnes region, including Ásbrú, Keflavík, Njarðvík, Sandgerði, and surrounding municipalities.
Infrastructure in Ásbrú Well Suited for Development
According to Styrmir Hafliðason, Managing Director of Verne in Iceland, the Suðurnes region is exceptionally well suited for data center operations, not least because of its proximity to Keflavík International Airport and Iceland’s favorable natural conditions.

“Cooling is extremely important for data centers, and by taking advantage of the cold climate and natural ambient cooling, significantly less energy is required to cool the equipment,” says Styrmir. When selecting the location, it also became clear that the buildings left behind after the departure of the U.S. military aligned well with the company’s focus on sustainability and green energy. “We were able to reuse existing buildings and give them a new purpose. Also the proximity to an international airport is key to a global company like ours” he adds.
Data Centers as Part of Modern Infrastructure
Looking to the future, Styrmir emphasizes that data centers are an essential component of modern infrastructure, with their importance continuing to grow. “Data centers are becoming just as fundamental to society as energy utilities,” he says.
“It is very positive that this critical infrastructure, which society increasingly depends on, is located in our local community and contributes to the development of the Reykjanes region. We are excited to be part of the growth ahead and the planned development in the K64 area.”
