U.S. Navy pilot Greg Fletcher, who made an emergency landing of a Douglas Dakota aircraft on Sólheimasandur in 1973, saving the lives of all on board, visited his former home in Ásbrú in Reykjanesbær. Pálmi Freyr Randversson, Managing Director of Kadeco, and Halla Tómasdóttir, President of Iceland, welcomed Fletcher, along with a group from the Icelandic Coast Guard.
Fletcher was based in the US military base, now called Ásbrú, for the year he stayed in Iceland. He spent most of his time at the base, and the goal of the visit was to reacquaint him with the area and introduce him to future planning and development. Pálmi Freyr gave a presentation on the K64 development plan, the role of Kadeco, and future development plans for Ásbrú. Following Pálmi‘s presentation, Fletcher spoke about the emergency landing on Sólheimasandur and recounted other stories from his time in Iceland.
"It was a great honor for us to have both Fletcher and the President of Iceland with us today. Fletcher lived in the area years ago, and the landscape has changed considerably since he lived here. It was both valuable and instructive to talk to him and a great endorsement of our work to hear how much faith he has in the future development of the area and the opportunities that lie here in the vicinity of the airport. At the same time, his visit reminds us of the great cultural heritage of Ásbrú and the importance of keeping that heritage alive," says Pálmi Freyr Randversson, CEO of Kadeco.
